Madison Simis Elementary School – Forever Green!

March 04, 2010

Girl Scout Troop 2315 in Phoenix, Arizona knows how to rule the school and spread the word that recycling everything, especially shoes, is cool!

Mrs. Wine helped Adrienne, Aloysia, Cassidy, Katie and Paige organize a Nike Reuse-A-Shoe collection at their school. “We chose this project as our part in the Girl Scouts Forever Green Project this year to celebrate 100 years of Girl Scouting,” said Adrienne.

GirlScoutDrive.jpgThe 4th graders at Madison Simis Elementary School had fun promoting the drive and telling their friends to clean out their closets! Aloysia explained, “We put up the posters we got from Nike and for four days before school we were in front of the office collecting shoes and handing out the stickers, posters and buttons Nike gave us. Everyone liked the buttons the best.”

Cassidy was motivated by the video: “When we saw the video of children getting playing fields we decided this was the way we wanted to do something for other children that could last many years.”

The girls feel that recycling is something everyone should do to help the planet earth. Katie said, “We also help out with our school’s recycling program, we gather the paper from the teachers and make sure it gets in the proper recycling bins.”

The project was fun and the whole school pitched in, Paige said. “We collected over 300 shoes in just four days. All the families at our school really helped us out! We have the best school!”

A big shout out to the hard-working team at the Tempe, Arizona Nike store that boxed up and shipped the shoes to the recycling center! Great job!
