Featured Surface Installations
When you choose an athletic surface made with Nike Grind, you’re not only choosing an environmentally sensitive solution – you’re choosing a surface made using the industry’s leading techniques and materials.
Because Nike only partners with carefully selected, highly respected companies to manufacture and install surfaces made with Nike Grind, you can feel confident that your surface will exceed expectations for durability and performance.
Here are just a few of the high-profile and innovative places where our partners have recently installed a surface containing Nike Grind:
Lance Armstrong Foundation Headquarters
Austin, Texas | 2010
To further its environmental focus, the Lance Armstrong Foundation added more than 1,300 square feet of Training Ground to its headquarters in Austin, Texas. The surface, installed by ECORE International, contains 25 percent Nike Grind Rubber and provides a comfortable base for two staff gym areas. The Training Ground also supports the building’s LEED Gold certification – the second-highest rating given by the U.S. Green Building Council.
Ricardo Montalbán Theatre
Hollywood, California | 2009
Nike and the LA84 Foundation partnered to bring youth in LA a new place to play soccer – the roof of this historic theater in the heart of Hollywood. Rebound Ace installed the new surface, which contains Nike Grind in its rubber shock pad. Now the Montalbán, which regularly hosts performances and events inside the theatre, also serves as a community field for soccer players across the Los Angeles area.
LeBron James’ Personal Court & Playground
Akron, Ohio | 2009
Cleveland Cavaliers star LeBron James needed a durable, professional-level place to practice – and he got it when Nike Grind partner Rebound Ace installed a regulation-size basketball court at his home. More than 15 percent of the court’s underlayment is composed of Nike Grind, adding more than 300 pounds of recycled midsole foam to the project. In addition to the basketball court, partner Playtop also installed safety surfacing for a matching 1,000-square-foot play area that incorporates 10 percent Nike Grind.
Julia’s Field at Ainsworth Elementary School
Portland, Oregon | 2009
Built in honor of 10-year-old Julia Reimann, who was tragically killed in an accident, Julia’s Field is a synthetic turf featuring rubber infill made from 100 percent Nike Grind. Made from more than 22 tons of recycled material, the turf’s infill is the first in the world to be made completely from Nike Grind. Built with support from Nike and donations from countless community members and businesses, Julia’s Field is designed to share Julia’s spirit with the community and provide the children of Ainsworth with a safe place to play.
Vivian Stringer Child Development Center, Nike World Headquarters
Beaverton, Oregon | 2008
The first LEED Platinum-certified childcare center in the nation, the Vivian Stringer Child Development Center features a poured-in-place safety surface from Playtop, as well as dozens of other sustainable features, like insulation made from recycled denim and photovoltaic solar panels. All together, these energy-efficient and recycled features add up to an amazing example of environmentally sensitive design.
The Buzz About Nike Grind
"LeBron came to me and asked me to build him a full-sized NBA court. I made the drawings and presented some ideas to him and he suggested I contact Nike. Rebound Ace performed the install, resulting in a very attractive court. The surface is very forgiving yet plays true. Our experience here was a good one for both myself and LeBron.”
Jack Plas
Builder & Estate Manager for LeBron James
"I worked as construction project manager on the Montalbán Theatre located in Hollywood, California. The court was constructed with a steel reinforced concrete structural base and sport court surface from Rebound Ace. This surface provides an excellent interface for active play. All persons I had the pleasure to work with were professional."
Jay Beller
Construction Project Manager, Montalbán Theatre
"After researching many different surfacing materials for our playground, we chose Nike Grind because it was environmentally friendly, but most importantly because we found it to be the safest product on the market with the least amount of maintenance needed. We are so overwhelmed with the finished product and extremely pleased that we decided to go with Nike Grind. I’ve heard parents describe the surface as feeling 'spongy,' 'spring-like,' 'cushiony' and 'SAFE.' We’ve watched students fall and get right back up with no scrapes, brush burns, or holes in their clothes. We are confident that we made the best decision and investment with choosing Nike Grind."
